Real Housewife Cindy Barshop Waxes On Motherhood And Hair Removal

But the Real Housewives of New York star is managing to juggle motherhood and running her successful chain of hair removal spas, Completely Bare, all as a single mom.

RadarOnline.com exclusively filmed Cindy with her two adorable daughters Jesse and Zoe and she shared how parenthood has changed her. "Having the kids in my life has made me such a calmer person. I actually got a house in the Hamptons, I rented it so I could spend more time with the kids," Cindy said.

"The corporate structure before was just myself, my brother and two other people."

Palomar Gets $31 Million As Syneron Settles Hair-Removal Case

Palomar Medical Technologies Inc.,a maker of cosmetic lasers, said it will receive $31 millionplus royalties from Syneron Medical Ltd. (ELOS) in a settlement oftheir patent-infringement dispute over hair-removal systems.

Syneron and its Candela unit will get a license to Palomartechnology for professional hair-removal systems, and will payroyalties for home-use products, the companies said today in astatement. Palomar will also get a license to some Syneronpatents.

The settlement ends a dispute started in 2006 over high-powered lasers used to remove hair. Burlington, Massachusetts-based Palomar's lawsuit was against Candela, which YokneamIllit, Israel-based Syneron bought last year.

The agreement "eliminates our exposure to continued legalliability in the matter, does not require any additionalpayments for professional hair-removal systems, and supports ourongoing efforts to improve the company's gross and operatingmargins," Syneron Chief Executive Officer Louis P. Scafuri saidin the statement.

Both companies make light-based systems for cosmeticprocedures including the removal of hair, wrinkles and varicoseveins.

Palomar rose 26 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $8.66 at 4:29p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Syneron rose 38cents, or 3.7 percent, to $10.56 in U.S. trading.

General Hospital Corp. in Boston , which licenses thetechnology to Palomar, will get 40 percent of the settlementpayments minus Palomar's legal costs.

The settled cases include Palomar Medical Technologies Inc. (PMTI) v. Syneron Inc., 08cv11902, and Palomar v. Candela Corp.,06cv11400, Candela Corp. v Palomar Medical Technologies Inc.,both U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts (Boston).

What Are Great Foods Toe Eat/cook For A Diet To Lose Weight. What Is The Ideal Workout And How Long?

I have been trying to lose weight this summer. I have lost some but I am not satisfied. I need some tips pleas. I think I am eating the right stuff but maybe there are better foods. And most of them are tasty! I lost 30 lbs eating foods from this cookbook of mine. I would suggest you look online for diabetic recipes or find a diabetic cookbook and start there.

If you're thinking of doing workout such as jog and gym...hmmm.probably your in wrong assumption.

Intensive Aerobics and Exercise will NOT BURN FAT.

The Reason is Intense Aerobics and Exercise only burn mainly carbohydrates for energy, not fat tissue.

If you over-exert yourself and your breathing and heart rate become too elevated then your body will burn mainly carbohydrates.

However, your goal is NOT To burn Carbohydrate Calories, your goal is to burn stored BodyFat

Here are some of best food to cook at home and eat. Basically our there are 3 types of calories, and which calories are in each type of food that you eat.

Lose Weight?

i am 14 ,currently a student, weight ard 81kg/170+lbs, i want to lose weight constantly , dunnid to be fast, due to my studies , there isn't really any chance to exercise, wat other ways can i do to lose weight?

Ok heres what i suggest, i had the same problem , i am 16 and i got up to 190 lbs and now im at 160, i want t oloose like 10 more but generally i am happy. First Drink WATER all the time . like 4 or 5 nalgiene ( really big) waterbottles full. Do not drink anything carbonated and try and cut out ALL PRESERVITAVES these hold onto fat and make you hungrier. And so you keep the weight off allow yourself to have say 1 juice glass full of soda a week or 1 piece of cake or somthing that wat you wont feel deprived at all. Next you said you dont really have time to workout, ok thats fine but say your going to school park as far from the door as possible and speed walk EVERYWHERE it will be a way of getting a little bit of exercise eventhough you dont really have the time. Or you can do somthing lik ebuy DDR (www.ddrgame.com) and do one or two sets a day (like 10-15 minutes).Another thing that greatly helped me was walking around naked every chance i got. I know it sounds weird but it helped me to be more comfortable with my body and realize that if i diddnt like somthing it wasnt going to magically change i had to work to make a difference and every small difference was noticable. And the last piece of advice i have to you is when you wake up every morning look into the mirror and say out loud one thing you love about your body or your personality. Having self confidence really helps you stick to what u gotta do. Believe me befor i started doing all that i would get depressed and loose the drive to do somthing about the way i was. It diddnt happen overnight either, it took almost 5 months but it is a safe and healthy way to loose weight and fastI hope this helps you Kailley

Get an exercise tape and do it for maybe 20-30 min. Walk as much as you can during the day. Also cut down on your food intake...Only have 1 helping in stead of 2...etc. You can do it!!

You may not have time to exercise as you see it, but there are loads of opportunities each day. Try getting up a 1/2 hour earlier and going for a walk. Each time you reach for food, divide the portion in half.

Try and remember you didn't put the weight on overnight - you won't be able to take it off overnight.

Check online for exercises that you can do while sitting down, like leg raises, and upper body twists, those you can do while studying.

Also you can record your studies and then listen to them while walking.

IF you REALLY want to lose the weight, you will find a HEALTHY way to do it. There is no shortcut here, sorry.

Drink lots of water and don't eat after 6 or 7pm because your metabolism slows down and you're going to be immobile and sleep soon. That should help alot.

Also eat negative calorie foods. They take more calories to burn than they have in them. Snack on veggies and start eating whole wheat breads and pastas.

Stay AWAY from fast food burgers. Some of those things have enough calories for the entire day and you KNOW you'll be hungry again after eating one.

Rare Surgery Brings More Weight Loss, More Risks

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A less common form of obesity surgery may spur more weight loss than its far more popular cousin, gastric bypass -- but at the price of greater long-term risks, researchers reported Tuesday.

The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, followed 60 severely obese patients who were randomly assigned to either gastric bypass surgery or a more extensive procedure known as duodenal switch.

Two years after surgery, duodenal switch patients had lost more weight: about 50 pounds more, on average.

People shed a substantial amount of weight with either type of surgery. Gastric bypass patients cut an average of 111 pounds, while duodenal switch patients dropped about 162.

But those extra pounds came with nearly double the complication rate.

Of the 29 duodenal switch patients, 62 percent had problems like abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and intestinal obstruction. And several suffered long-term malnutrition -- something not seen in the gastric bypass group.

Duodenal switch is not a popular procedure. In a 2008 study, it accounted for just 1 percent of weight-loss, or bariatric, surgeries done in the U.S., and 5 percent in Europe.

The technique is often reserved for "superobese" patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 50 or higher -- though some surgeons perform it with less severely obese patients too, explained Dr. Torgeir T. Sovik of Oslo University in Norway, the lead researcher on the new study.

"As duodenal switch can be associated with more adverse events, this procedure should only be performed in carefully selected patients by a dedicated bariatric team," Sovik told Reuters Health in an email. "And a closer follow-up after surgery is required after such procedures."

But an expert not involved in the study went further.

"This is an operation that should probably go away," said Dr. Edward H. Livingston, a professor and surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

The average weight loss seen with either gastric bypass or duodenal switch will improve or reverse obesity-related ills like diabetes, sleep apnea and knee arthritis, according to Livingston, who wrote an editorial published with the study.

So for those medical conditions, it probably wouldn't matter if a person lost 100 pounds or 150 pounds over two years.

BMI is a measure of weight relative to height. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight, and above 30 is obese.

The patients in the current study were a fairly healthy group despite having a BMI of 50 or more.

After two years, those who'd had a duodenal switch showed a greater improvement in their cholesterol levels. But those levels were near-normal (in both groups) to begin with, Livingston noted.

That begs the question, he said, of whether the extra weight loss "actually accomplished anything."

"The answer is 'no,'" Livingston said.

In the U.S., where about 220,000 people underwent weight-loss surgery in 2009, gastric bypass is the most common form chosen.

During gastric bypass, the upper portion of the stomach is stapled off to create a smaller pouch that restricts the amount of food a person can eat at one time. The surgeon also creates a bypass around the rest of the stomach and a portion of the small intestine, which limits the body's absorption of food.

Duodenal switch is more extensive. The surgeon removes part of the stomach, and the remaining "sleeve"-like stomach is attached to the final section of the small intestine; that puts even greater limits on the body's absorption of calories and nutrients.

Both surgeries carry the long-term risk of nutritional deficiencies, and people need to take supplements and carefully monitor their diets for a lifetime afterward.

But the risks of nutrient deficiencies are greater with duodenal switch, and include some not seen with gastric bypass, Livingston pointed out.

Some people, for instance, may have severe calcium and vitamin D loss leading to weak and fragile bones. Other problems include severe protein deficiency and night blindness caused by vitamin A deficiency (which is also reversible with extra vitamin A treatment).

In this study, three of the 29 duodenal switch patients developed protein malnutrition, two developed night blindness, and one had a severe iron deficiency that needed to be treated with iron infusions.

Livingston said his advice to people considering weight-loss surgery is to avoid duodenal switch. "It's just not a good operation," he asserted.

But he also questioned the value of weight-loss surgery, in general, for severely obese people who do not have medical conditions that stand to improve or resolve after surgery.

In general, experts say that surgery could be an option for anyone with a BMI of 40 or higher; that translates, roughly, to a man who is at least 100 pounds overweight or a woman who is 80 pounds overweight.

Livingston said he thinks more caution is in order when a very obese person is otherwise healthy.

Along with the risks of surgery, he said, there is still uncertainty about whether it actually lengthens people's lives. Some studies have suggested it might, but not all.

In a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Livingston and his colleagues found no survival advantage among severely obese patients who'd undergone weight-loss surgery versus those who hadn't.

The study involved 850 U.S. veterans who underwent some form of weight-loss surgery, at an average age of about 50, and more than 41,000 vets who had only non-surgical care. There was no evidence that surgery improved longevity over the next seven years.

"We really don't even know if there's a survival benefit," Livingston said.

That, he added, makes the risks of duodenal switch seem even less worthwhile.

But according to Sovik, duodenal switch might be appropriate for some superobese patients.

In the U.S., he said, about one in three weight-loss surgery candidates have a BMI of 50 or higher. And studies suggest that a sizable percentage of those people will still have a BMI higher than 40 after gastric bypass.

In this study, one-quarter of gastric bypass patients still had a BMI that high two years after surgery -- versus none of the duodenal switch patients.

More extensive monitoring after duodenal switch, Sovik noted, can help detect and manage side effects.

He pointed out, though, that larger, longer-term studies are still needed to show whether the extra weight loss with duodenal switch ultimately improves severely obese patients' health and extends their lives.

Update On Laser Hair Removal (side Effects And All)

Since posting this blog, I've gotten a lot of followup questions about laser hair removal . Let me first preface this with: I am no expert! So, please just realize this is my personal experience (which I'm more than happy to share).

Like I stated before, I was a little bit afraid - you know, having read horror stories of laser-hair-removal-gone-wrong from Google searches! But, I pressed on and had it done. Actually twice (almost). So far, I've finished my 6 sessions of underarm hair removal and have had 4 of 6 lower leg (below the knee) sessions. Here's what I have learned thusfar:

1) There's nothing to be afraid of. The little lasers feel like tiny rubber bands popping your skin. I figure, if you can handle waxing, you can handle the lasers. It's no picnic in the park, but it's not exactly childbirth either!

2) If you do happen to use a LivingSocial / Groupon / Odeals / HalfOffDepot deal, just be sure to read the fine print AND call and find out exactly how much "taxes and gratuity" will be. My LivingSocial deal at one place nearly doubled in price because they automatically charged a set amount of gratuity each and every time (6 times) I went there. Oh, and there was another miscellaneous one-time fee they charged me as well. So it's best to call and find out what extraneous fees you might incur. (I learned that the hard way!)

3) Any fears you have, just call and set up an appointment to talk with the technician who will be performing the laser hair removal. A consultation will really ease your fears and concerns.

4) Those lasers are adjustable. My underarms didn't have any issues, but my legs felt like they were burning the second time I went in. I just told the technician and she adjusted it and also added more of some sort of gel to my legs and knees and voila, I was fine.

5) It varies for everyone, but after my 6 sessions for underarms was finished, I was told I would need to schedule a few more "touchups" to remove any new hairs that may appear. And after about a month, I did get a few new fine hairs appearing, so I will be scheduling a "touchup" soon. I was told that from time to time you'd need to do touchups, but that they weren't that expensive and would only be needed 1-2 times per year and that eventually I wouldn't need any touchups at all.

I have to admit, I really am pleased with my results.

I know I got a lot of questions about side effects. The only side effects I experienced were:

First time I had my underarms done, for about an hour afterward, I felt like I had a slight sunburn. But after that hour, it totally went away. It felt perfectly normal after that.

Also after the first time, a few days later I noticed my skin had darkened slightly (I'm African-American and have a medium-brown complexion). Honestly, it looked like I had tanned really well under my arms! But after two weeks or so, my regular coloring came back (and it never happened again).

The second time I got my legs done, the laser actually hurt around my knees (one or two zaps into the session, it felt like I had gotten burned a bit). I immediately told the technician I could feel heat and she readjusted the laser and put more gel on my knees and legs before proceeding. Since she readjusted the laser, I haven't had anymore issues.

I did notice that two of the four times I've had my legs done, shortly thereafter (maybe a week?), on the outsides of my legs it began to itch a bit and after scratching it seemed like I had a few "goosebumps" on the itchy part. I told the technician this and she just recommended I keep lotion or some sort of moisturizer on my legs. After applying a good lotion, no more itching, no more "goosebumps".

Those were the only side effects that I experienced. Just be aware that it differs for everyone.
